This 'n That

I recently acquired some new teacups so I am going to make a pot of tea and I hope you have time to join me. The Goodwill here has cups and saucers for only $1 and I got these on one visit. This pretty one with the gardenias is English,.
I got three of these Noritake cups and saucers, plus 2 dinner plates, 2 salad plates and 2 dessert plates, all 50 cents each!

This pretty white one was made in the Czech Republic.
I wish I could say that I got this at Goodwill. I check eBay fairly often to see if they have my Dainty Blue cups and saucers. I used to have a tea set for 8 but over the years the cups have gotten cracked or broken, so I have been wanting to replace them for a long time. Usually they are too expensive and I've never been able to afford them but the other day I was able to get one at a reasonable price, so I was thrilled!
I found a treasure on my way to a quilting class on Saturday morning. I was a little early for the class so when I saw a "garage sale" sign, I naturally had to stop. I found this wonderful quilt top, all hand sewn. It looks like it's made of old shirt fabric and it's in great condition. The lady who sold it to me told me her great aunts made it, probably in the 1920s or 30s. It was hard to get a good picture of it.
Here is a close up. It is lovely soft blues, and cream colors. My plan eventually is to put batting and a back on it and hand quilt it. If any of you are quilters, you'll appreciate this. It was foundation pieced with butcher paper or paper bags or something. The weather man was calling for frost last night, so I gathered very sheet and lots of my fabric and tablecloths and covered up a bunch of the more tender plants and bushes. What a relief! We didn't have a frost!
I have been busy working on 2 quilts, which is why I haven't posted for a few days. One just needs the binding, so I'll be able to show you that one soon. It has taken me several days to plan the other one and I started sewing on it yesterday. I got three blocks done and I hated the way it looked! Does that ever happen to you? You start a project and it isn't turning out how you had planned? So I slept on it and thought about it as I dozed off to sleep and then thought about it when I woke up. This morning I redesigned the whole thing and I hope when I start to put the pieces together that I will be happy with the result.
So that's what I am going to do with the rest of my day. What are you doing today?

  3. I've seen quite a few other people covering their plants as well! It's very cold up here, with snow flurries. I love the teacups you were able to find! Especially the one with Mother inscribed in it! How wonderful is that old quilt and the story that went with it. Will you be able to finish it or just leave it as is? Enjoy the rest of your week!!

  12. What a lovely post today, Rhondi. I also have a collection of tea cups. I've stopped adding to it, but can always be tempted by Dainty Blue. Right now I am always searching for red and white transferware - hard to find up here, but then the search is half the fun!
What a stroke of luck to find that quilt top. Of course it has found its proper home, with someone who will appreciate it and finish it.

  14. Hi Rhondi -
Your new cups and saucers are wonderful. Each one is a treasure by itself. I love the price! Today I'll go to a nearby community where I am the chaplain in a care center. I'll spend time with the residents there, visiting and being a friend. Then I think I'll stop by the Goodwill to see what they have that needs to come home with me. And a trip to the grocery store is on the schedule, too, so I can get what I need for Easter Sunday Dinner at my house. This evening my sweetheart and I will eat dinner with my dear mother at her home. She is a GOOD cook!

Hope you have a great day. Can't wait to see your quilt project.

  18. What great deals you can get at your GW. All of your bargain teacups are so pretty, and I love the ebay purchase to match ones you already have. I think if I'd seen that on ebay, I would have been bidding against you! The quilt is such a wonderful find. I can't believe that people get rid of these treasures made by family members. I'm so glad that someone who will appreciate it has it now. laurie

I have that same cobalt blue and white tea cup. The funny thing is, I can't remember where I got it from. A garage sale perhaps.
All your sweet treasures so charming.

Come by for a visit, the company would be nice.

    Sweet wishes,
