Painting Furniture

I was hoping you'd stop by today.  I made you some oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.  I can get you a cup of coffee too if you'd like but my husband says I make the world's worst coffee so maybe you'd better have a cup of tea instead!  I hope you can stay awhile because I need to talk to someone.

I can't decide what to do and so I need a second opinion.

I got this table and two chairs at GW a couple of years ago for only $35.  The top was really in bad shape so  my plan was to paint it.  Most of the time I have a tablecloth on it.  Well I decided it's time to paint the whole thing and I had in mind to paint it blue and paint all three chairs the same.

Yesterday I gave everything a coat of primer.

Then I went to Lowes to get some paint chips. There are so many wonderful shades of blue to choose from!

But here is my dilemma.  I like the look of it white.  I'm concerned that if I paint it blue it's going to stand out too much in the room and detract from the view out the windows.  I'm wondering also if blue will limit me too much in the colors I can use in that room. Rather than have the color be in the table and chairs I can accessorize the tabletop with different colors.  Usually I am pretty bold with my use of color, but the white looks so nice.  Am I just playing it safe?

What do you think?

I just noticed I'm almost at 300 followers.  Maybe some of you lurkers could become a follower and put me over the 300 mark?  I would be so excited!!

  1. Love your window view and blue bottles, I have bottles like that in my studion window.. I am a new follower and thought you might like my blog too! www.dlrubypalette.blogspot.com It is my Artwork Inspiration and scripture. When you get a chance check it out, Thanks. About the blues, I would suggest you leave the table off white or white so you can add table cloth accents. and paint chairs the lightest blue on your favorit card deck. Just a hint of blue to add color and not cause a distraction from the window, Good luck with your decision and Gods Bless, Deborah

  2. I like it white. You can always add blue seat cushions and various blue tablecloths. I think having it white will give you more choice in the long run and you can have fun with changing out the linens and things.

  3. I'm with Manuela on this one. I love the white furniture look, and you can always add color through slip covered cushions and those cute chair shrugs....

  4. Rhondi,
Oh! I love it white. Just think of all the table runners, tablecloths, chair cushions, and all the other accesories you can change about and they will all look great with white. White also will not block your view. Which BTW is fab..

  6. Remember your virtual room on White Wednesday?... I think secretly you've been longing for some white. And I agree with the others; you have so many lovely, colorful things to accessorize with.

  7. I think you have already convinced yourself to make it white and I agree. I love blue, but you could use cushions on it in blue and it would be great. Good luck

  10. Looks like the white is winning. I vote for that--though I also was going to suggest one red, one blue, and one yellow! Just for fun.

The good thing about paint is that you can always do it over. What a great find at Good Will. I sure don't have much luck at that store.

And you are over 300 ! Congratulations...

  11. I say go with the white, it looks great with that white primer on it. And then you can accent it with color. You could even decorate for the seasons more easily with white.
    Blessings!

  13. I think all blue would be too much, but some blue would be nice. How about painting the pedastal blue and leave the top white? Pull it together with blue and white fabric on the chairs.

  15. Rhondi, you don't need one more voice on this, but I say "White". I always think of the wonderful chair covers you made with the shirt fabrics. I'd like to do that myself one day. (Probably never happen) You can always add color with textiles and accessories. What ever you decided to do, I know it will look fabulous. Everything you do always does!!! ~ Sarah

  16. I agree with everyone else - White! Maybe rub a little off on the ridges, if you want an aged look.

  17. so I'm guessing white it is! That reminds me of the Christopher Lowell show, way back when. He always advised keeping large items neutral and go crazy with color in the assessories. I think that would be so much easier to decorate, without blue overkill.

How about a dark navy blue?

  19. Wow, that is an amazing number of followers...however I can see why. You are like a wonderful friend we all wish to have.

I agree with everyone else...your table will be fabulous white but I know that whatever you do it will be beautiful.

I really adore all your blue and white things and thank you for the precious visits each day.

  20. I think white would be really nice. Colorful cushions and pretty placemats will add the color you are looking for.
Thanks for the cookie! (I can't make coffee either. I have always been a tea person.)

  21. Well it looks like my voice is the same as most everyone elses. White! Or you could paint the table white and the chairs various shades of light blue, but white can be accessorized so many ways:>) Earl doesn't think you should paint it at all (he is such a "man", I told him to hush.) I love the claw feet on the table and I see you hit your 300 mark!

  24. You're over 300 now! Wonder who put it over?
My first thought was a very dark navy blue, almost a black blue. The commenters bring up a very good point about white or antique white. Such a quandary. Good luck. Look forward to see what you decided.

  25. Hi Rhondi...

Ohhh...how exciting! I love these kind of projects! Hehe! Well my friend, I absolutely love this table and the chairs! My dear friend Cindy from Applestone Cottage has the identical table and chairs (I believe) and she painted her's white and they look fabulous!!! I think the blue is very pretty but if they were mine...I'd stay with the white and add the blue in with the accessories! This way you can change colors out and you won't be limited by the blue! Just my opinion! I wish you the very best in your decorating decisions...have lots of fun, my friend! Can't wait to see what you decide!

    Warmest winter wishes,

  26. Stick to the white. You have such beautiful accessories to put on the table and chairs. You'll have plenty of beautiful color that way. Your pieces are perfect.

I signed up to be a follower. Honestly, I don't use the followers thing. I just have a long list that I visit daily. :)

  28. Looks like the overwhelming vote is for white - and that's my vote also!
I love painted white furniture. I have few pieces that will soon be getting a coat of white paint myself!

  29. Leave them white. Absolutely. You can accessorize with blue-- on the cushions, on the table, lots of ways.
Years ago my sister-in-law had the most gorgeous antique dining room table and chairs. She painted them white (her mother nearly passed out when she saw what her daughter had done to those valuable chairs.) and they really looked fabulous! I tactfully kept my mouth shut.

  30. I would paint it white. It looks so nice with just the primer on it!

  31. I agree with all the other ladies I would paint it white. I love your blog. I hope you have a great weekend.

  32. Hi Rhondi,
Although I think you have already decided to keep the table and chairs white, let me add my agreement with the others that the white looks wonderful. With your decorating skills, you will add plenty of color to the table. If you want blue, maybe a blue tablecloth or placemats would suffice.

    Love your blog!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the idea of white table and blue chairs. You have such a talent for using fabrics and accessories, you know you can make it as blue as you want, switching it up for holidays or your mood.

  34. I vote white too, Rhondi! Please pass the cookies...........

  35. I, too, vote for white. It looks so fresh and would be so versatile. I also thought that the details on the chairs showed up so well with the white primer.

  36. White is a great choice and from what I remember from your wonderful vignettes you create - it would work great with so much of what you already have. You can change the seat cushions and color themes to go with your many celebrations of life.

  37. Hi Rhondi, as the screen scanned down and I saw the white primer, I thought "Oh, keep it white!" That's my vote. (BTW, I follow you on Google Reader.) xo,

  40. White does it for me every time! Though I love blue and white china I don't like blue anything else so maybe you didn't ought to listen to me anyway!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Rhondi,
I think I would stick with the white then you can change it up at will. Then if you needed to use any of the chairs in another room later you would match there too. I am sure whatever you decide it will look marvelous!

  42. I'm guessing by now you've figured out white is the way to go. Those blues are beautiful but with the table and the chairs being blue -- definitely would be too much. You can certainly accessorize with blue. The photo in your header is so lovely with the white wicker and all the blue accents. I have no doubt you will do it up beautifull. By the way those cookies look fantastic. I have friends who visit especially for my coffee -- so I'll make a pot and you bring the cookies! Yummo! Have a great day. Blessings, Tammy

  43. Yep, I'd have to say white as well. It looks so pretty and crisp and clean. The options for accessorites with white is endless. And I don't think it will take away from your view as much, though you know I too love blue!

I'm just popping back in to tell you how much I love your blog header. It looks so inviting.

I've just returned from a long walk and would love one of those cookies with some tea.
    Thank you very much.

I hope your weekend is blessed.

  45. Hi Rhondi,

I would love to have a cookie and cup of tea with you - now here is my 2 cents worth - my first impression of the table before I saw that you painted it white was to go white and slightly distress it by lightly sanding a few "wear" spots on the legs and corner of chairs and table. That way you can use blue chair cushions, table cloths and also kinds of accessories - escpecialy your precious blue and whtie china.

    Have fun.
    Blessings,
    Erin

  47. WHITE. As you know blue is my fav. color. I tell you that all the time but the white is so pretty. I think it has to stay white.

    ReplyDelete
  48. My first thought was to keep it white. White is very cottage, and your table linens, placemats, dishes, etc. can completely change the mood. I guess you have to weigh two things: 1. It's only paint. It can be redone. or 2. Do I really want to have to do it over if I get tired of it? Not to mention, if you want to change your linens and tableware with the seasons, it may be tough to do with blue furniture. Oh well, I guess that just my take. I must admit though, I've been seriously toying with the idea of painting my kitchen set bright red, to go with all of my vintage kitchen stuff. I'm no help at all, am I?
