I have to confess that often I am not thankful at all. I am not satisfied with the things I have. I am wanting things I don't need. Wishing some things were different in my life. Looking at the things I don't have rather than the things I have. Feeling sorry for myself over some trivial thing....
That's why I like to take Thursday to post about being thankful. In this country where we have so much, it is so easy to forget that we live a very rich life. Even in this terrible economy with so many jobs uncertain, including my husband's, we still live the life of luxury compared to most of the world.
So today I am thinking of a few things I take for granted:
Food: I will not have to worry about having enough food for today. I'll have 3 good meals and there is plenty of food in our pantry for many days to come.
Shelter: I do not have to sleep in the street. I have a lovely home with heat and air conditioning and furniture .
Water: I don't have to walk 5 miles to get water. It have it hot and cold in my home.
Transportation:I don't have to walk long distances to town or to school. I have a car. My husband and I both have a car and we even had an extra one before the tree destroyed it.
Safety: My family is safe. There is no war here, or violent civil action.
Health: We are all healthy right now but when we get sick we can go to the doctor.
I thank my Heavenly Father who has provided all these things for me.
What are you thankful for today?
Rhondi
I feel the same way as you do about this. Without those very simple things our lives would be very different indeed. We really do need to be grateful for the basics. When we are, everything else is much more joyful.
ReplyDeleteI am thanksful for peaceful days. Slower days...time to enjoy the things around me in the presence of God. Time to visit my in-laws and do little things for them. Time to enjoy cooking a meal. Time to sit at the computer and visit. Time to enjoy a good book. I enjoy trying to seek God's presence during my daily moments.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Rhondi. And, a wonderful reminder to count our blessings.
ReplyDeleteWe have so many.
Oh, Rhondi...this is beautiful. And your first line was totally incorrect...you Are thankful!! Look at all you just listed. And you opened my eyes. Thank you.

I think your post hit the nail on the head. I completely agree with you. Well said. I might add that I am thankful for perfect days like we are enjoying today.
ReplyDeleteI am thankful for all the same things as Rhondi. I am thankful mom is napping peacefully in her easy chair. And I will be thankful when I son gets home because we have a Thunderstorm coming. But I am also thankful he is with his girlfriend which I like very much. Have a wonderful Thankful Thurs. Rhondi.
ReplyDeleteI grew up with nothing and had to fight for what we did get. I learned along time ago to be Thankful for anything that we have. I still thank god for what we have everyday and to be able to keep what we do have. As long as I have my family it is more than enough.

Love my husband SO much. He's really something.
ReplyDeleteI often feel the same way, Rhondi, and it was good to be reminded how much we really do have to be thankful for...we take so much for granted.
ReplyDeleteI am thankful for my family, and my home, and I'm thankful for the beautiful sunshine today.
Hugs,
Donna
You are right, we all have so much to be thankful for. I am rarely unsatisfied with my life despite having diabetes and an anxiety disorder. I am thankful for the medicines I take to control these problems. Just a few years ago I wouldn't have had these options.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Rhondi. I needed that today. I can be so impatient. Not good. I'll be thoughtfully and thankfully joining you on Thursdays. ---hopefully it will last all week! :-)
ReplyDeleteHi Rhondi,
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy your thankful posts. This is our Thanksgiving weekend so I am especially thankful to have all our family close by so we can all gather together here for a lovely turkey dinner.
Take care,
Carolyn
You are so right Rhondi! I often think about the every day blessings I take for granted. I am grateful for every little thing of beauty in my life:>)
ReplyDeleteI tell myself the same thing when faced with pictures in Newsweek or Time about women in other countries who have to walk so far for water. Or don't have food for their children. Of course we have the latter in this country too. I tell myself to just be thankful for the roof over my head, and that I am!

Hi Rhondi,
ReplyDeleteI'm grateful for socks.
The other day I bought some new socks to replace the old ones with holes in them. Then I remembered all the children I know (I work in a school that has many poor children)who come to school with filthy, holey socks- or no socks at all. Now when I look at my new socks, I am so grateful to God for giving me even something so seemingly small as new socks.
This is a beautiful post. We must all remember what we have and not take it for granted. I am thankful for all that you mentioned and for the friends I have made blogging. Blessings.
ReplyDeleteRhondi, my neighbor and I often take morning walks together. This morning we had this very conversation as we walked along the creek side. We have so much to be thankful for in our lives and need to learn to be happy with what we have. We are so blessed! Thank you for sharing these thoughts with all of us today.
ReplyDeleteWonderful post..........thank YOU for reminding me of the things I DO take for granted.......I am thankful for all of the things you mentioned, and more time with my husband......and my sweet LORD speaking to my daughter and son-in-law's hearts, as I pray for them to give their lives to him so that they can teach THEIR children about GOD's great love for all of us.
ReplyDeleteThose are huge blessings, and yet so easy to take for granted.
