The Ugly Duckling Becomes A Swan

In the last post I showed you the bench I got at Goodwill. Here it is now. I'm not sure if this is the final version. My plan was to paint some stripes or something on the legs, but I decided to just leave the legs white for now. The fabric is one of my UFOs. For you non quilters that is an unfinished object. Every quilter has lots of them! It was made with men's shirts that I picked up at Goodwill. I already had all those blocks sewn together with the border of stripes, so I just took it apart and used only what I needed for this project. There is enough left over to make a couple of cushion covers or something. The border just happened to be the exact size for the footstool!
I just happened to have this fringe here too. It came off some old curtains that I got at a thrift shop. This definitely is a thrifted project! Unfortunately I don't have enough trim to go all the way around. The sides you can see in the photo have trim but the ones you can't see don't! So since this has been such a low budget project so far, I am going to keep my eyes open for some trim that is similar and just have 2 different trims on it!

I am very happy with how it turned out.On Friday 2 books that I ordered from Amazon arrived in the mail. I only had a time for a brief glance at them so I have made myself a cup of tea and I am going to put my feet up on my new footstool and get inspired for my next project.
Hope that you are having a restful Sunday. That's what I intend to do.

  14. I don't think you ought to do anthing else with the legs. Keeing them plain like that lets the fabric speak for itself.

Your bench looks about the size we would call a footstool - only if anyone put their feet on it I mighty have to kill them! Not only are you clever but you have the patience of a saint.

    love, Angie, xx

  29. This is definitely a swan ending.
You had the prefect combination of UFO's. Everything came together so well especially with the fringe. I like the painted legs, because it draws your attention to the fabric and trim.

    Sweet wishes,

  31. Now that is one gorgeous transformation! I was thoroughly impressed with the first photo and to read that you had rescued it from the thrift. But to discover that you had used a quilt top you had made AND that the top was made from men's shirts that you had also rescued for the thrift, now I am blown away by your resourcefulness and your talent. This bench if fabulous in every way and I love the way it looks with the blue and white chair. Just stunning!!!

  32. I love it.I so wish I could quilt.I come from a long line of hand quilters but it stopped the generation before mine and by the time I was old enough to learn my grandmother's health wouldn't let them teach me.It's one thing I've always wanted to do.Sadly my small town doesn't have any classes or anything like that either.
    Anyway your house is beautiful!
