Company For Breakfast

“Come look,” my husband called to me on Saturday morning. It was a sweet little fawn.DSC07842
I quietly snuck around behind the deck and she stood still and looked at me for a minute, Then she turned and looked in the other direction.DSC07846
Her mother was there. She was probably telling her to get away from these humans. You can see her camouflaged on the right side of the picture.DSC07849
“Come on,” her mother called. DSC07850
Reluctantly the little fawn turned and darted off.DSC07847
But not before she finished off her breakfast of the last of my impatience! And just yesterday I noticed that the impatience plant had gotten quite large and the deer hadn’t touched it. Oh well, that’s life when you live at the edge of a woods!
When was the last time you had guests for breakfast? I served mine impatience. What did you serve your guests?

  2. Oh Rhondi, what incredible pictures!! They look like they are right out of a wildlife magazine!! The fawn is so cute!!

Here in the city we have nothing but squirrels. They don't impart a lot of trouble. At the lake we have all sorts of animals, there is a road that separates us from the woods and they rarely wander over. I'm glad. We have a lot of coyotes and I have little dogs!

What a great post, my friend!!

  4. We have bunnies in our back yard often, even though we live in town. Of course it is a pretty rural area. I'm never sure just what they eat, but they are always enjoying munching with the song birds. I have a feeling they like the sunflower seeds.

  8. Your guests are so cute. You are very lucky to have them so close to your yard. We occasionally get oppossums at night...not good because they drive Buddy & Conner crazy. Lovely post and beautiful yard. Mumzie :)

  10. The deer were so sweet looking. I love their eyes. The few that I saw up north near Carmel California were quite small. These looked pretty tall.

  12. Your deer pictures are gorgeous! We once had a small fawn hanging about that wasn't afraid of anyone. The kids all called it Bambi. One day when the neighbor shooed it away from his garage, it turned and went up the front porch steps to go into the house...must have been surving up apple bark or tulips in that house!
We once had a cougar run through our yard, almost too fast to notice.
The best guest was a huge moose with enormous antlers that strolled through the yard, sniffed at the sheets hanging on the life, then turned around and walked away.
Those were the days before I always had a camera handy. Too bad.

  13. So sweet! I would plant a yard full of impatients is they would bring deer into my yard! We have them all around our neighborhood, because we have so much open space, but I can't get close enough to get pictures...thanks for sharing your fawn with us!

  14. What nice pictures! No wonder they came for breakfast... impatience is so juicy. Probly tasty, too. Comparing your fawn with ours here in N.CA., your fawn seems more delicate, pointier nose, shorter neck, but the same beautiful eyes and spotted coat. They are so pretty. Once of the commenters mentioned seeing a cougar in their yard... we are so thankful NOT to see the cougars this year. We hold our breath and count fawns every morning. Our back yard adjoins a creek and a deer path that leads to the river nearby.

  16. We had members of that same family for breakfast, lunch and dinner until The Great Dane built a deer fence (8 feet high)around our two acres this summer. I never knew that hostas could flower, that dahlias could grow so tall and come in so many colours or that climbing hydrangea could produce blooms! No more of those big eyes looking up from brunch - they can gaze from the other side of the fence.

  17. How adorable Rhondi...we entertain bunny rabbits quite frequently. They especially like our baby rose bushes.

  18. We have a lot of dear where we live in Australia but where I am now in New Zealand at DD's place there are ducks everywhere. One came in the door of the dining room for lunch today. Your photos are wonderful, thanks for sharing them.

  20. Rhondi, We have lots of unwanted guest,,,skunks and the dogs want to chase them,,,so you know how they smell when they come back.
Our wanted guest are Mr Tom Turkey and Ms Hen..they come every morn for their corn and milo.
I have deer in the pasture, but pray the dogs don't see them.
Love you visitor, nothing is prettier and a fawn.
    Thanks for sharing.

  21. Raccoons! They had self-serve chunks of my lawn in the front yard - followed by water 'lovingly' sipped from my little water feature near the front door. They didn't want the water at the surface. Oh no, they wanted the best at the bottom so they rearranged the rocks along the bottom of the pond.

  25. I was almost as entranced by everyone's comments as I was by your post Rhondi. The variety of animals you get in your gardens over there is amazing. I'm sure there must be places in England where creatures can be found (though not cougars or skunks I bet!)but in our garden all we get is the occasional hedgehog or toad. Not even a bunny for our trouble!

  26. Our last guests for breakfast are regulars. We have a family of rabbits that live under the garden shed. While we hate that they eat the flowers and vegetables, at least they're cute!

  27. How wonderful to live at the edge of the woods! What delightful creatures you have visiting you, even though they do eat your garden.

Around here, in the middle of a sprawling metropolis near Los Angeles, I have two stray cats who arrive regularly for breakfast, a rogue squirrel who shows up now and then and chatters at me from the avocado tree, and a couple of blue jays. The cats get cat food, the squirrel gets nuts, and so do the blue jays.

  28. The deer ate my hostas this spring and are now helping them selves to apples on the apple trees!

I love their visits just wish they'd eat the weeds! LOL
