Thankful Thursday

Today I am thankful for cardinals. I want to tell you a story about them but first let me show you these wooden cardinals I got at a yard sale for 50 cents each. They are even signed by the artist!

When I brought them inside I wasn't sure where to put them. There was some discussion among the flock as to where they wanted to be.

It was decided that 2 would be on the windowsill in the kitchen and have a view outside. My little ceramic cardinal was glad to have some company!DSC08240
One nestled in among the teapots in the corner on the kitchen counter.DSC08241
The other three decided they'd like to be near the TV. Even though their team (The Cardinals, he he) isn't in the playoffs they wanted to watch the games!

So my new acquistions are all settled in. Now let me tell you a story.
This happened a long time ago when my husband was concerned about losing his job. I was sitting out on our patio, talking to God about the job situation. Well actually I was probably complaining to Him! We always put bird seed out for the birds, but this particular day I also put some seed scattered along the low stone wall that surrounded our patio. While I watched, several cardinals came over, landed on the stone wall and began to peck at all the seed I had put out. I enjoy watching the birds, especially the cardinals, just because of their brilliant color.
As I sat there watching , I thought about how I provided food for the birds every day. Usually the food was in the feeder but today there was food in a different spot and there was lots of it. It was then that I had a revelation. I think that it was God showing me. Just as I provided for the birds every day, God will provide for my needs. But here was the bigger lesson from watching the birds. Those cardinals had always got food from the feeder and today there was a new source of provision for them, from a place where there had never been food before. But what the cardinals didn't know was that I had a huge bag of seed inside, so when that seed was all gone I had plenty more for them. It was like God said to me, "I have an unlimited supply too. Just enjoy what you have today and when tomorrow comes I'll provide."
So today I am thankful for a God who provides and for that unforgettable lesson I learned from watching the birds.
What are you thankful for today?
Rhondi

  2. What a lovely find! Those brilliant spots of red are just beautiful:>) I have had the same lesson you speak of. We rely on God's provision daily and he never fails us. I am thankful for a loving God who teaches us daily about his provision and love.-

  3. Beautiful story of God's revelation. I'm thankful that I know Him & can leave the running of the world (especially my little world) up to Him.

I've loved cardinals since I was a little girl and first saw them on a jigsaw puzzle I was given. I've never seen one in real life! I think I'll have to start looking for one to bring into my home!

  4. Rhondi,
I love your story about the cardinals. I think that the Lord does that...shows us parables all around us to comfort us and let us know that everything will be okay. Red Cardinals are special. In the middle of winter they are so vivid against the snow. I love your new Cardinals, a good reminder to have around the house.

  6. Rhondi, the red carved birds are what drew me into your story. It is wonderful how God does provide for us. I am very thankful for all that I have gone through, learned, loved and experienced. I would not be the wife, mother or nurse that I am today without such moments. Thanks, Stephanie

  8. I so enjoyed this post. My grandmother, whom I called Mimi and who also helped to raise me loved cardinals. We had a sliding back glass and she would always sit and watch them and she had a bird bath. Every time I see a cardinal I think of her. She was very, very special to me.

Thanks again and I am now following you!!

  9. I think cardinals are one of the most beautiful birds! Since we don't see them here, we are always excited when we spot one while camping or travelling. Your lesson learned reminds us again that God sees even the little sparrow when it falls.

  25. Good story for me, too. He always provides, but sometimes it might be in a way we aren't expecting. Our eyes need to be focused on him, rather than the provision. Love your cardinals. Thanks for sharing.

  27. Precious birds, Rhondi! What a great deal you got on those!

I'm thankful for family and friends, but most of all, I'm thankful that I have a Savior who is so wonderful that He laid down His life that I (and anyone who believes) might have life and have it more abundantly! :-) Yep, that's a biggie!

    Sheila :-)

  28. Rhondi,
I found your blog from Elizabeth's Frenchvillage. I really do believe it was the Lord's guiding hand, because what you wrote about the Cardinal birds hit home in my heart!
You see my husband has been out of work for almost two months and I been praying about the same thing--how are we going to make it.
The Lord brought two scriptures to me--Psalm 27:14b & 4:8.
I also love to feed birds & watch them; esp. Cardinals. They are so chipper:) Well, we were out of birdseed, so I had not seen birds in the yard for a while. My husband knows I enjoy watching them when I am sipping my coffee, so he bought some. I put some out today.
As I am reading your story, a single Cardinal comes up to the little table I sprinkled some seed on & chirped and ate!
I am so grateful to the Lord for bringing me to your blog :)
